Good Bye Michael Jackson – We Loved You!

Michael Jackson Live Archive Just received some terrible news! Today at 6:15 EST and 3:15 PST, Michael Jackson was pronounced dead at UCLA Hospital. The news reported he suffered a cardiac arrest, fell into a coma and died shortly thereafter!

This was quite shocking to me! I loved Michael Jackson as a young girl. As a matter of fact, I had a HUGE crush on him! His death was quite a shock! What a sad day! We’ve truly lost a unique and rare talent who transcended race, color and sexuality in the 80’s.
Can you believe he was the first black artist to be aired on MTV’s videos in 1982 ???

I posed this old photo of him as that is how I remember him in his best years. It feels like an entire era of my childhood has died with him. Michael was with me when we left Bulgaria and drove 3 days to Austria. I remember my mother saying how talented he was. I remember being in Austria as a political refugee with my parents and listening to Billy Jean in 1989 in our room. I loved dancing and trying to do the moonwalk while my parents were out working. Those were some of the most difficult years of my life. I didn’t speak much German, I was sort of isolated as we had just left all our friends and everything we knew for a chance to come to the United States and live a better life. For 2 years in Austria, Michael Jackson along with Madonna, was my favorite artist, my best friend, my dancing partner and probably one of the things that made me happy for a few minutes a day. Every time I hear one of his songs, I remember that time in my life.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who associates him with certain times of my life. People usually feel very nostalgic about certain songs, foods, smells, sounds, etc. that remind of periods in their lives. Michael Jackson is my teenage years so it was quite sad to hear he died today!

I hope his young children will be taken care of and will not suffer a lot. And I hope the media will let these children mourn properly and stay away from them and not turn this into a circus! This is not a spectacle! Unfortunately, what is most likely to happen is the same as Princess Diana’s death. The media will probably start hashing out all dirt and anything else they can find on this poor man for months now. :(

Once in a while, a true star is born, that shapes the tastes and fashion of the world! A star and introduces never-before-seen moves, sounds, looks, and influences others for decades! Michael Jackson is absolutely one of those stars. A true legend!

Rock on Michael! You will live forever in our hearts through your music and through the inspiration you have brought up in younger artists and through the memories you have created in all of us!

Low Fat Diets

42-15654134Remember when it was decided that “fat” content in our food was the thing we had to watch? There was no mention of carbs being an issue – startch was our friend. It was our fuel and A OKAY! In the 90s fat was the culprit and carbs were totally fine. Remember how there was a huge diet craze where people were screaming out things like “low-fat cream cheese” and “low fat mayo”!? No one said a word about carbs – we were encouraged to eat pretzels and bagels and pasta and all kinds of GLORIOUS carbs.  Remember when being on a diet meant you could eat like 5 plain bagels a day as long as the cream cheese was low fat?!

Than that bitch Atkins had to come along and ruin it for all of us. (Sob) Why can’t we just think it is the fat in the food we eat that are the problem!? Why did we have to learn the aweful truth? Ignorance is bliss. I want to go back. I don’t want to know the truth.

Someone bring me a damn bagel….with low fat cream cheese of course, I AM on a diet you know.

Cavaricci

smokinghot80sIn the moments when I think I look my absolute worst  of all time (Heres an image: first thing in the morning, wearing purple velour pj pants with my husband’s oversized t-shirts) I look in the mirror and think I have hit rock bottom. However, this little ad I came accross today reminded me that, oh no my friend, you have done much worse. In public. When you thought you were looking hot. When you were trying.

Remember when Z. Cavariccis were  the MUST have item?! They were as cool as Jordache jeans but perhaps just a bit cooler because they were “imported”. They were italian and super expensive. Seriously back THAN those things cost like $80. $80!! That is like $4000 now. For pants that made you look fatter. Seriously. The way those things were cut, they gave you the widest hips…Ever. Look at the girl in the ad – you throw her into some low-rise jeans and she goes down at LEAST 2 sizes.  Cavariccis are proof positive that there were a lot of drugs in the 80s – cause you would have to have been on crack to wear something that makes you look worse. Our carb starved asses would NEVER pull some nonsense like that now.

But back then, I owned 8 pairs of Cavaricci’s at one time. Seriously. Eight. Olive, black, tan, this odd lovechild shade of pink and peach, blue, jean, gray and beige. The only thing sadder than this fact? It was the year I was voted “Best Dressed” in my NJ high school yearbook. Saddest fact of all? I was not doing crack in the 80s.

So next time you are feeling like, “Wow, I really don’t look as hot as I used to”, remember sometimes you really did not look as hot as you thought you did at the time. Or you did, it was only because you were on crack.

Electric Youth..Never Gets Old

electricyouthWhich is the funnier fact : Electric Youth, the perfume we ALL wore in the 80s designed by Debbie Gibson is STILL being sold or a few years ago she tried to relaunch her career using the name Deborah because her NAME was the biggest challenge in her comeback?

Okay at the risk of repeating the navigation bar too much  – OMG Remember when this Debbie Gibson was so huge? Did you also have a copy of the queer hat she always used to wear?  Seriously, rock the Electric Youth cologne, the matching black hat that looked eerily similar to the one Charlie Chaplin wore, and belt out the words to Electric Youth or Lost in His Eyes and BAM you have a snapshot of my preteen years. The only thing I am missing now is my Tiffany poster. Damn I bet those girls got into some SERIOUS drugs at some point. Well “Debbie” and Tiff did the drugs…”Deborah” is too sophisticated.

So since I can’t recapture my youth, I can at least smell it. I am not sure if it is really “electric” but if you ask me, any perfume with hot pink spiral pump shape, neon green writing and a price point of $11.00  is a MUST HAVE.
